A Guiding Role
Cultivating previous key philanthropic investments by retooling and building strategy into the future is a guiding role of Applebaum Family Philanthropy.
Updating for the Future
To help ensure the Marcia and Eugene Applebaum Simulation Learning Institute at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital continues to be “state-of-the art,” Applebaum Family Philanthropy recently provided an additional seven figure commitment to help upgrade equipment and technology, increase staffing and create a resource plan for equipment obsolescence.
Dr. Kathryn (Kate) Ziegler, general surgery specialist and an assistant professor of surgery, serves as Executive Director of the Marcia and Eugene Applebaum Simulation Learning Institute. In partnership, and with financial support from Corewell Health, Kate and her team have developed a comprehensive strategic review and business plan to ensure stability and propel future growth and innovation.
“The generosity of the Applebaum family in helping to keep the lab current and up-to-date will not simply benefit the thousands of people each year who participate in training here, but will also benefit the tens of thousands of patients who are under their care.” Dr. Kathryn Ziegler.
Today, the facility now includes nontechnical training for physicians to learn ways to interact with patients, navigating difficult scenarios, or patient family dynamics. The goal is to accommodate any kind of practitioner who wants to simulate something in advance of practical scenarios. The facility has grown, serving more than 10,000 learners for nearly 900 programs.
For nurse practitioners – a high volume of current training participants and an undoubtedly growing front-line segment in the delivery of patient care – simulating procedures from low to high tech, is instructively transformational in effecting optimal care in real time settings.
“Believing in the principles of high-quality health care and education is central to our family philanthropy. Under Kate’s leadership, the Institute is poised to grow its innovative training footprint well into the future. We are so pleased to help enhance this vital education center.” Pamela Applebaum
Innovating Medical Education
In 2006, Eugene and his wife, Marcia, made a multi-million-dollar gift for the Marcia and Eugene Applebaum Simulation Learning Institute to be built, designed to change the way health care professionals learn and train. It was created to be utilized as a system-wide resource to teach trainees, students, residents, nurses, surgical technicians the best care practices and cutting edge techniques and innovations,
“Gene wanted Beaumont (now Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital) to be the very best and provide the best education so that we had the best medical care. Gene saw before most of us that medical simulation learning and training was going to grow, and that this innovation was key to the next generation of medical professionals. So, he and Marcia set out to make this a reality. The impact has been transformative.” Margaret Cooney Casey, President of the Corewell Health Foundation – Southeast Michigan.
To be sure, Mr. Applebaum’s vision for the Applebaum Simulation Institute to be a leading center for educational excellence would not have been realized without the commitment of Margaret Cooney Casey. Her leadership has been transformative, and it paved the way the for a strong future.
“We are proud to build upon our parent’s vision and support. Strengthening education with innovation was always so important to my father. We look forward to the positive impact the Applebaum Simulation Learning Institute will make in the years ahead.” Lisa Applebaum
